Rosignano Marittimo is a municipality of 30.558 inhabitants in the province of Livorno. Its name, Rosignano, probably derives from a Roman citizen, Rusinius o Rasinius. In 1862 its toponym was completed with "Marittimo", i.e. of the Maremma (from the Latin "Maritima"). This municipality hosts an important medieval castle, which was often struggled upon because of its strategic position. Its new fortifications were built in 1562, during the reign of Cosimo I de' Medici.
The municipality of Bibbona is located in the valley of the Cecina. This area stretches from the sandy shores of the Tirrenian Coast to the metalliferous hills and is renown for its beautiful woods. Near Bibbona, in fact, is the "Macchia della Magona", a 1635-hectar wood, full of interesting naturalistic paths, leading to the parks of the Cornia valley and to the woods of Volterra.
The small city of Vada dates back to 1700 and is located south of Rosignano Solvay. This municipality is characterized by a small centre made of recent constructions, which is surrounded by fields and sea. In ancient times it was known as the "Rada del Saraceno" (Anchorage of the Saracen). Its shores are sandy, bordered by many cluster pines, and its sea is a diving paradise with shoals full of fishes.
